Homemade Won Ton Wraps

Won Ton wraps have been on my to do list for a while.  I saw a recipe on Pinterest a while back, and was excited to see how simple they were.  Between all my other cooking adventures the past year, my desire to attempt homemade egg rolls got pushed aside.  That was until recently, when won ton wraps returned to the front of my mind as a dinner idea.

I decided to make Chicken Egg Rolls and wanted to make the won top wraps for them.  To get started, I found a basic recipe to follow.  The neat thing about these is that they require only basic ingredients: flour, water, egg, and salt.  Throw in some filling ideas and you have a meal all planned out.

To begin, I sifted the flour into a large mixing bowl, then dug a hole in the center.  In a small bowl, I beat the egg with the salt and water, then poured it in the center of the flour.

I mixed the dough thoroughly, until it formed into a ball.  I used a small amount more water, only enough so that it would fully combine. I then let it sit for about 30 minutes, wrapped in plastic wrap.

After resting, I put the won ton dough on my pastry board lightly covered in cornstarch, as I read that it would not dry out the dough.

I separated half the dough, and rolled it out on my pastry board into a large rectangle.  Then, I started cutting out the wraps.  The original post suggested treating the dough like phyllo, covering the half that was not being worked with with damp cloth.  I kept it rolled in the plastic and worked quickly with the portion I was rolling out.  I dusted the board with corn starch per the original posts suggestion, as using flour could dry out the dough, making it harder to work with.

Then, I cut the dough into squares about 3 to 3.5 inches on each side, rolling the uneven pieces together and re-rolling them so I could get the most out of the dough.

I stacked up the won ton wrappers on a small plate, then got to mixing my fillings for the egg rolls.

See how easy that was?  The only extra step is that little bit of patience while the dough rests.  Then, just fill 'em and either fry or bake them.  I can't see a reason to buy these pre-made unless I break an arm and just can't roll out the dough.  I have many ideas for there, from buffalo chicken egg rolls to vegetarian ones, and will surely be following this recipe in the future.

Homemade Won Ton Wraps Recipe

Ingredients:

2 cups flour
1 egg
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup water

Instructions:

Sift flour into a large bowl and make a well in the center. Beat together egg, salt and 1/4 cup water, then pour into flour well. Mix together, adding additional water as needed until the mixture forms into a ball.
Knead the dough until it is smooth and pliable.  Let rest for at least 30 minutes.   Divide dough in half, and roll out the first portion into a large rectangle.  Cut into 3.5 inch squares.  Repeat with remaining dough.  Roll filling into wraps, using beaten egg to seal the edges.  Bake or fry until golden brown.
